In Korea there is an interesting culture of dealing with dreams. People who have had good dreams for example, such as one involving a pig which traditionally alludes to the arrival of wealth, can actually sell their dream to someone else. Any dream which has a positive interpretation has a value that makes it a desirable asset for someone else to acquire. Koreans buy and sell dreams for fun. Bongsu Park is going to make this transaction of an intangible asset more external and organized in the form of a public auction.
She is interested in how our dreams can be expressed externally and shared through and re-imagined in the transactional arena of an art auction. Art forms are becoming more intangible – from the physical to the fluid and ephemeral. She plans to shift the emphasis towards ideas, dreams and desires that cannot be reduced to three-dimensional physical forms. She hopes to encourage people to see the value in the transaction of ideas and imagined scenarios rather than a physical manifestation of those thoughts.
For the DREAM AUCTION people can register their dreams as text and submit them to the auction through the DREAM AUCTION website. The dreams submitted will be listed as the text written, printed and framed, ready for purchase. The dream will remain unedited from the time of submission with no alterations or corrections can be made thereafter.
An accompanying score will feature musicians Charlie Collins and Ryoko Akama, whilst the participants’ dream texts will be a central component of the sound creation.
Bongsu Park is a London-based Korean artist. She studied at the Slade School of Fine Arts, UK and at l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, France. She has exhibited internationally in both solo and group shows including Zona Maco Arte Contemporaneo-Sample, FIAC Paris-Cinemephere, The Moving Image Istanbul, Barcelona LOOP, Camden Arts Centre in London, Gyungnam Art Museum in Changwon, South Korea. Bongsu Park’s practice involves video, live performance, site-specific installation, sculpture and drawing.
The artist’s most recent body of work focuses on live performances where audience participation is becoming more central. What unifies her work is a sustained and developing interest in the cycle of life: the fundamental questions of birth and death, growth and decay.
Ryoko Akama is a sound artist/composer/performer, who approaches minimalistic compositions that magnify silence, time and space and offer quiet temporal/spatial experiences. Her works examine delicate and fragile objects such as paper balloons and glass bottles, creating tiny occurrences that embody ‘almost nothing’ aesthetics. Her performance and installation works are comprised of automated mundane objects and simple electronics in order to produce spontaneous vibration activities. She runs melange edition label, amespace and co-edits mumei publishing.
Charlie Collins is a creative percussionist, free polyrhythmic drummer, and sound artist, based in the UK. His work continues to explore the boundaries between pure sound and rhythm, frequently incorporating metal percussion and free improvisation. Early recordings for cult labels Industrial, Fetish, and Doublevision were soon followed by collaborations with many of the pioneers of free improvisation, while his interest in East Asian percussion and rhythm technique is displayed in current work with Ryoko Akama, komungo player Eun-Jung Kim, pianist Yoko Miura, Butoh dancer Tsukasa Kamidate, and visual artist Bongsu Park. He is one of a handful of musicians to have played both Derek Bailey’s Company Week and Top Of The Pops.
