gallery rosenfeld is excited to announce artist performance Nuptiae Mysticae a Mystical Wedding on Friday 5th of June to start off London Gallery Weekend at the Fitzrovia Chapel.
Nuptiae Mysticae has been conceived as a contemporary ritual centred on the relationship between artists Marta Jovanović and Cristiano Leone.
The Latin title draws upon the rich symbolic tradition of the nuptiae mysticae, the “mystical marriage” that runs through Christian mysticism, medieval imagination, Renaissance painting and alchemical thought. The work gestures towards a process of mutual transformation founded on trust, vulnerability, attentiveness and the shared passage through creative practice.
Cristiano Leone is a cultural manager, artistic director and curator. His work develops through the dialogue between contemporary creation and historical heritage, approaching curatorial practice as a form of critical responsibility and as a field of tension between temporalities, spaces, institutions and artistic languages. He currently serves as President of the Fondazione Antico Ospedale Santa Maria della Scala in Siena, one of the earliest public hospitals in the world and, since the 1990s, a major museum complex closely tied to the cultural identity of the city. There, he leads the strategic direction of a historically layered institution, focusing on the transmission of heritage as a living experience and on its reactivation through contemporary artistic practices.
His theoretical reflection is articulated in The Atlas of Performing Culture (Rizzoli International Publications, 2023), a volume exploring the role of performance in the construction of cultural memory and in the organisation of time. He has taught Artistic Direction, Performance Art and Cultural Management at Sciences Po, Bocconi University and LUISS Guido Carli. He has also curated artistic and cultural programmes for institutions including French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici, National Roman Museum, Centre des Monuments Nationaux and Baths of Caracalla. His research focuses particularly on the performing arts as dispositifs of relation, memory, transmission and temporal transformation.
Marta Jovanović is a performance artist, researcher, and educator. Her work has been presented in international biennials and exhibitions, including at the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf, and is included in private and museum collections. She was a resident artist at the Getty Research Institute and has participated in an academic exchange with Yale University.
Her research is published in Marta Jovanović: Performing the Self (Martin E. Segal Theatre Center, CUNY) and New York New Wave by Kathy Battista, where she is positioned among the most significant feminist artists of the New York scene. Her work is documented in the award-winning film Born Just Now: Art and Life of Marta Jovanović by American filmmaker Robert Adanto.
