ON VIEW: Rebekka Homann

26th June - 31st July 2025

gallery rosenfeld is delighted to present two works by German artist and recent graduate Rebekka Homann.

Her practice revolves around complex social dynamics, namely topics of caretaking, attachment, interdependence and the way in which (emotional) labor shapes relationships to others and the self.

She explores these topics in 3D-animation, sculpture, and drawing and combines these media in installations and video sculptures.

Her works  "Object of Dependence" and "Beast of Burden II" form part of a broader body of work that investigates the complex interplay between dependence, responsibility, and care. Central to this exploration is the way these forces shape and complicate relationships between humans, and between humans and the nonhuman world.

In "Beast of Burden II," the two horses depicted are recurring figures in the artist’s practice. They are not merely symbolic but are animated representations of two real horses the artist cared for from childhood into early adulthood. This prolonged act of caregiving was emotionally and psychologically layered, imbued with feelings of responsibility, labor, resentment, and guilt. These affective entanglements continue to resonate in her current work, informing her inquiry into how such emotional dynamics manifest across different kinds of relationships.

Both "Object of Dependence" and "Beast of Burden II" incorporate material elements that physically embody the themes they investigate. In "Object of Dependence," crutches serve as metaphors for support and limitation; both enabling movement and signify vulnerability. In "Beast of Burden II," a yoke physically binds the two horses together, representing both forced cooperation and the burdens of interdependence. Through these symbolic and literal objects, the artist reflects on how mechanisms of support and constraint are often intertwined in acts of care.
