Nicola Samorì has put the stories of saints and martyrs at the centre of his practice, with a particular focus on Saint Lucia. Lucia is the Saint protector of the eyes and sight concepts that evoke, by antithesis, ideas of darkness and blindness.

In the Mart exhibition, in dialogue with the “caravaggesca” representation, Lucia and other femal saints and martyrs, who have been condemned and often forgotter, find their voice through Samorì’s works. Tears, incisions and scrapings on the surface of his works force the viewer to focus on the saints' battered and stripped bodies.

Samorì’s practice is extremely contemporary while at the same time it echoes classical paintings. Through transformations and deconstructions, using modern aesthetic techniques, he recollects visual intelligences from older times.
