Lu Chao's oil paintings draw their formal inspiration from traditional Chinese ink painting. His original technique, in which a bold and adventurous use of black and white mirrors the drama of the story-telling, pays a remarkable tribute to the economy of means embodied by traditional Chinese black ink painting. However, his narrative, concerned with the interaction between human being and sources of power yet as terrestrial authority yet as metaphysical entity, fits entirely into the 'humanistic' Western tradition.
A subtle humorous note permeates his glimpses on contemporary society where anonymous human faces or bodies in miniature seem to be blindly accepting their fate.

Lu Chao was born in 1988 in Shenyang, China. He currently lives and works between London and Beijing.
Chao studied oil painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts Beijing. He completed his Master's at the painting department of the Royal College of Art in London. Chao has had solo shows in ambitious international galleries across Europe and Asia. A duo exhibition featuring his work was held in Venice during the Venice Biennale in 2017 and received much acclaim. His works have been acquired by the Louis Vuitton Collection, DSL Collection, The Strock Collection, Today Art Museum.
